Rules of the road
Jun. 28th, 2007 09:51 amBetween driving in downtown DC yesterday and driving in to work today, I found myself contemplating the "rules of the road" that I generally drive by - and why other people found them so hard to grasp.
Now, I'm not talking about traffic laws, here. Just some concepts that seem to me to be fairly intelligent, if not obvious. For example:
Courtesy: Now, to me, this not only implies that you let people merge as necessary, but things like if you know you're going to block an intersection, don't go out in said intersection. Don't make life difficult for the other drivers, that's all!
Yield to Tonnage: This is one I adapted/stole from
stoooooooo. If it's bigger/heavier than you, assume it has right of way and act appropriately. Give it the room it needs/wants/requires. You may legally be in the right, but that will be small comfort when you're lying in a hospital bed looking like someone tried turn your spine into an accordion.
Now, I bring up these two because, yes, I have had to deal with both lately. Rather, I had to deal with people who didn't understand these concepts and decided to give me grief about them. I fail to understand why these concepts escape some people - especially the second one. Had this one asshat this morning who laid on their horn and cussed me out this am on the way to work because I (wisely, IMNSHO) decided not to play chicken with a convoy of cement trucks and let them go out of the construction site. Yes, technically, I had the right of way. I also drive a 1996 Mazda 626. In a matchup between the cement truck(s) and my car, guess who wins? (The insurance companies, but I digress)
Here's a hint: No one will be saying
grayhawkfh FTW!
Ok, I'm running out of steam. And even though I've solved one problem today (and I suspect that another may try to steal my accomplishment), they'll want more, I'm sure...
