Well, with the passing of Dave Arneson earlier this year, I couldn't help but rename the Dungeon Crawl. And it was sooooo popular last year, there was no way I couldn't NOT run it again this year.

And so, my 8 players ended up being challenged/ordered to stop the depredations of marauding giants by taking out the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief. Their first foray to the Steading ended in a bit of disaster, when they were unable to stop the alarm from being raised. This lead to a veritable outpouring of giants. While the party was, in fact, able to put a hurting on them, they suffered at least one death and several other significant wounds. Their strategic retreat (RUN AWAY!!! RUN AWAY!!!) allowed them time to regroup and plan. Due to the late hour, the good plans got mixed in with the silly plans and it took a while for anything to get done. When all was said and done, the two best warrior types were almost dead, the main thief was down, and most everyone else was in not the best shape. But, they routed the giants, and in the end, they achieved much more success this year than last.

I'm glad I took the time to do the characters earlier rather than later. I think the characters were a decent mix as well (Dwarven Fighter, 1/2 elven ranger, human mage, 2 human clerics, human monk, gnome illusionist/thief, halfling thief, and elf fighter/mage). I erred, however, in not ensuring that one of the clerics had a scroll with Resurrection on it. Raise Dead...not so good on elves.

The Wand of Wonder, though, in the hands of the Gnome...that was AWESOME!
Short version: People came, they played games, they ate fresh bread, they had fun. By any standard, this makes it a success.

Long version: This will be placed behind cuts.

TCEP 16: 2 Days!
Yes, ladies and gents, we here at Barking Mad have just confirmed that we will be playing host to a Live Action Murder Mystery event at TCEP 16: Craig & Tad against the World Crime League!

For as long as there's been a New Orleans, there have been rumors about what lurks in it's shadows. Is that the baying of a werewolf? Did I see a glint of fang in that woman's smile? Come and be a part of our Murder Mystery and find out for yourself!

This event is for 20 players; signups will be in the game room at TCEP.
Good afternoon, dear friends. Welcome to the latest installation of my ramblings, wherein I set down some thoughts about where I am and what I will be doing in the near future, and perhaps about what I done did.

Or some crap like that.

First, need to get some administrivia out of the way: Welcome to [livejournal.com profile] hai_kah_uhk & [livejournal.com profile] shaharazad, two lovely people whom I met last weekend (details on this to follow). Pull up a chair and rest a bit. Hope I don't bore you! I generally suggest that people read this post if they want to know more about me.

I think a bullet list is in order:
  • Me: Still doing well. Seem to be dropping more weight, as the pants seem to be looser and more prone to be affected by gravity.
  • Family: Also doing well. Kids enjoying summer camp. [livejournal.com profile] mousecat0 still doing well with her job. The summer progresses... ;-)
  • Work: Did very well on my 90 day review, so I am no longer on my probationary period. Moved cubes earlier this week in an effort to insulate the engineering & sysadmin staff from the userbase.
  • Last weekend: The big event last weekend was the wedding of [livejournal.com profile] pleasantlyevil and [livejournal.com profile] deceptiverose. They were kind enough to invite the 4 of us to the wedding, and so on Friday, we drove to my parents house in NJ, where we spent the night. Got up the next morning, got ourselves together, and headed out to the site of the wedding. We made one stop en route to consult maps, as the directions we had from Google Maps became slightly confusing. (This is what prompted the question regarding GPS devices earlier this week) Got there just in time. Sat behind [livejournal.com profile] servergirl and family. The hawaiian shirts the groomsmen were wearing were the same ones that we wore for [livejournal.com profile] stoooooooo's first wedding - this brought a lump to my throat. The wedding went well, with the only issue being the wind not allowing the candles to be lit. The reception was a lot of fun as well, with the couple having the good sense to sit [livejournal.com profile] blackpaladin & [livejournal.com profile] cassildra at the same table us (which also then precludes inflicting us on the other guests), as well as [livejournal.com profile] hai_kah_uhk & [livejournal.com profile] shaharazad, two more good peoples cut from the same cloth. Yes I snarked and made ribald comments, and yes, I did get my traditional dance with the groom in. As they say, a good time was had by all.

We stopped on the way back to my folks at a Stewarts for some root beer floats. Yum. Spent Sunday vegging out at my folks place, then headed home.
  • What's coming up: Taking my Technician's class Amateur Radio License test on Sat Morning. Got a Barking Mad Staph meeting on Saturday afternoon. [livejournal.com profile] mousecat0 & B are, I believe, going to MSD HQ for the monthly game. Sunday will be some well deserved quiet time and cleaning. Next weekend will be a Baysox game.
  • Gaming: Finally got a copy of Carcassonne, or rather, the Big Box "2", in a package that came with the Tower and Catapult expansions as well. Looking forward to introducing the kids.
  • WoW: Well, I was invited to my first 25 man Ulduar raid last night. Despite my misgivings at possibly being undergeared, things seemed to go decently. Died more than I would have liked, but am still unsure how one of the deaths came about. Whatever. If they'll have me back tonight, I'll be happy to continue.

And, that, as they say, is that.

TCEP 16: 51 Days!
Early bird pre-reg ends at the end of the month!
Step right up, ladies and gentlemen! The time is drawing near for TCEP 16: Craig and Tad Against the World Crime League - now in it's 16th year of being the best 4 days of gaming, relaxation, and fun in the greater DC area!

Who are we? Just a bunch o' people who get together and share good food, good times, and loads of GAMING! It's a very relaxed atmosphere, with plenty of space for people to bring their own games and find others willing to play them!

On-Line Pre-Registration: Is back! Although the old web team was devoured by shoggoths last year, we have been able to retrieve their notes (don't ask how). The website is up and running at http://barkingmad.org

LARP: Well, we had one, but Life (tm) has found a way to sink it's hooks into the people running it, and so again, its being put on the back burner. We're in "negotiations" for another one. Information will be forthcoming if it happens.

Games: In addition to our usual wide variety of events, we will be running the E. Gary Gygax/Dave Arneson Memorial Dungeon Crawl. As always, we'll have plenty of space for pick-up games!

Saturday night will feature our 4th annual Charity Poker Tournament to benefit The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, The Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, and The Mazzy Kaya Foundation.

We'll also be having a non-gamers area for those who prefer their relaxation to be more of the craft variety. Hosts & hostesses will be announced....when I have their permission. ;-)

Mix all of that in with the Friday night dinner (Bait Sushi at Asahi, or meat at Outback), our famous ConSuite (complete with fresh bread) and you have four days of fun that are not to be missed!
