Oh, far and away, it's the Jersey Devil.
For those unfamiliar with the legend, here's a quick bit of background
In the early-to-mid 1700s, a woman known as "Mother Leeds" (some versions claim that she was supposedly a witch) was set to give birth to her 13th child. During labor on a stormy night, she screamed out that this was the child of the devil himself. The child was born normal, but then changed form. It changed from a normal baby to a creature with hooves, a horses head, bat wings and a forked tail. It growled and screamed, then killed the midwife before flying up the chimney. It circled the villages and headed toward the pines.
Being born and raised in South-Central Jersey, driving through the Jersey Pine Barrens dozens of times a year (Rt. 72 to LBI), I heard the legends over and over, and spent a lot of nights hoping to catch a glimpse. Never did. I can also remember the Amateur Radio club that my folks belonged to (WJRA) holding a "Jersey Devil Watch" radio event for 2 or 3 years.
