For those who don't know, we have a cat. This cat, RC by name (short for Rum & Coke, which she had a fondness for getting into as a kitten), is, I believe, 18 years old. Quite old for a housecat. She's had a good run.

Today she goes to the vet, as she's been peeing everywhere but her litterbox. No change in the litter or the location of the box. She still craps in it, though [livejournal.com profile] mousecat0 seems to feel there's something off with that. There's a host of problems, including the fact that she's gotten rather thin.

I suspect rather strongly that she won't be coming home from the vet's office.

This is going to hit [livejournal.com profile] mousecat0 hard. We're ~4 days from the first anniversary of her father's death. She's raised RC from a kitten. The kids are gonna be hit hard too.

I was going to stay late today to make up the hours I missed on Monday. If my suspicion is right, I'll postpone that and stay late next Monday. They're going to need me more at home.

So if you can, spare a kind thought for [livejournal.com profile] mousecat0 and the kids today.

Updates as needed.

Loss of weight and peeing? Not good. Sounds like (impending) kidney failure. I've been through that with the old and now deceased Alarm Cat.

I am hoping for something better..

I was just about to reply Kidney Failure too....

It's what Eliza went through. Depending on the severity and your budget - you can probably extend your kitty's life - but our Eliza didn't respond to diet and supplement treatment.... however she did live for another 2 months.... with fluid being pumped into her.... at home.

Hopefully it's something less severe.

I am sorry to hear that - it was difficult enough for the us adults when we put our cat down this year - I cannot imagine having to tell a child. Here's hoping it is just something small, fixable and RC will come home. If not, here's hoping that you all have some good memories.

Oh that's terrible. I hope it's something simple like a UTI and they can treat it.

I still feel the loss of Schroder after having him for 17 years, so... yeah!

HUGS and fond wishes to you and your family!

Oh, I know what you're going through, having went through that with Goober and Lunch two years ago. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hopefully she's at a stage where you can bring her home for a while.

Years ago, my ex and I had to put down Pickle, an otherwise healthy and beautiful 20-year-old cat. She's always had a tendency to pee in non-litter-box places (the ex insisted she was marking territory from not having been fixed early enough in life, further insisting kitty did *not* have a bladder infection) because she not only started pooping out of the box, but she would poop *and* pee in the bed at night while someone was sleeping in it.

Its always hard to lose pets...

I'm so sorry to hear about RC. You and your family will be in my thoughts and I will hope for a better outcome than kidney failure. Blaise and I have been through that, too, and it's no fun even when you're an adult.

Ending the suffering of a beloved animal friend is a two edged sword: You know (and I believe the animal knows) that you did the right thing, but you still feel shitty and sad afterwards.

My thoughts are with you all on this. My best suggestion is to give yourselves some time and then get a new kitten. It really helps.
