Y'see, the following words came out of my mouth over the weekend:

"I'm thinking of volunteering for KatsuCon next year"

No one was more surprised to hear this than myself of [livejournal.com profile] mousecat0.

Yeah, I must have lost my damn mind, but hear me out.

[livejournal.com profile] mousecat0 and the kids are big anime fans. Me, not so much. Not really interested.

So, if the family was to go to Katsu, they would be having a blast and I'd be bored. Volunteering would be a good way for me to not be bored.

It won't be this year. Maybe not next year. But I can see it happening...

Sounds like a great idea. If you're going to be going anyway (which it sounds like you are), and you're not going to enjoy the programming (which it sounds like you won't), then what better way to make use of your time?

Two guys here in the local SCA barony had much the same idea. One of them loved fighting, and wanted to hold a fighting event; the other loved music and dance, and wanted to hold a music and dance event. However, they were both well aware of the fact that if they were the one running the event, they wouldn't be able to enjoy any of the stuff that went on. So they traded events: the fighter ran the music and dance event, and the musician ran the fighting event, thus each allowing the other to enjoy their chosen pastime.

just a thought.

"Stop me before I volunteer again...and again...and again..." -- seen on many buttons at any given con.

Actually, I think the plan sounds great, and would be a wonderful sacrifice you could make for your family. I like a man who puts family first AND contributes to the world around him in a positive way (like you do).

Please stop putting me on a pedestal. I have no business being on one, and with my lousy balance, I'll just fall off... ;-)

Traitor. :)

(Yes, I understand the logistical issues that make it much easier for you to do Katsucon. I am just teasing you because you'd be an asset at Otakon, and I have a stake in that.)

I have a stake in that

More like "Put a stake in that" ;-)

That said, since we have not been to an Otakon, we cannot say if it is appropriate for our "wee bairns". ;-)

Translation: It's not completely out of the question (well, for this year, it is), but first, [livejournal.com profile] mousecat0 has to get up there to check it out...

KN and I were planning to volunteer at Katsu, but didn't get our names in on time. We debate whether we'd do it next year, if at all; honestly, we do it for the people we already know are going to be volunteering, because hey, we rather like them...

Angel Vixen - You can volunteer any time - and they are especially looking at con for volunteers!

Staff is a whole 'nother kettle o' worms :)

Grayhawk - sounds like you'd have more fun volunteering. If you do next year, make sure I know so I can visit you with snacks :)

Thank you for pointing that out; I meant to say that we were looking to help as staff. ^^;;

The thing of it is, I just got out of being a staffer at another convention (anime), wherein I spent one year loving it, one year enjoying it only because I was dating my DH (I was transferred into his department literally about a week before the con because my previous DH went nuts, and also the SO suddenly needed to fill a staff spot anyway), and one year hating and loathing it with a passion. So I'm leery of getting back into the circuit, but KN tells me volunteering can be a lot more laid-back than staffing.

Heh. I SO understand. My hubby and I staff Katsu, Ravencon, AMA, Balticon, NekoCon and Anime USA. I know...we're insane. That said, volunteering is very laid back. You don't have a set schedule - you can volunteer for 2 hours or 10 hours - YOUR choice. And if you don't want to be security, you don't HAVE to be :) If you are already IN the area, and you LIKE anime cons, come on down :) But I suggest getting a pass online as we might sell out...due to a smaller hotel.

Thanks - I stole the icon from Girl Genius (www.girlgeniusonline.com). The artists - Phil and Kaja Foglio will be at Katsu.

Crazy?

I don't know how volunteering works, except that in order to not be treated as staff you'd need to use the word 'no' in various forms, I think.
Especially since the podling arrived, I think if we do show up at Katsu, it'll be a 'wander around to see friends for an hour, check out merchants room, then bail' sort of event.
